I started using coconut oil six months ago. I like the Vitacost brand at vitacost.com. I don't think it has done anything for my thyroid, but it has reduced my blood glucose readings and A1C. I am Type II diabetic and since starting using coconut oil I have been able to reduce my medication by over 50%. I use it every way I can think of. Here are some of the ways I use it: Rubbing it onto fish before grilling; slicing a sweet potato in half lengthways and poking holes with a fork then rubbing down with coconut oil and cooking flesh side down in an oven at 350 degrees for 30 minutes. I substitute it for whatever fat/oil is called for in all baked goods.

<strong>(From Janie: Interesting. I've been using it to take off my eye makeup every night, then after I clean my face, I apply a little on my face before sleeping.)</strong>

omg HELP!! is right!! I just thank god for the blessed internet, and i'm not even religious :D Take your time, take good notes, chat to other patients, meditate, find out how to deal with the moods & cognitive problems (eg. supplements-to-take & shopping & plans list inside your wardrobe door, keep food-supp-symptom diary), go with the moods sometimes ie. freak out then rest, like on a schedule, by yourself. Eventually something will work. Thats my 2c, good luck. Things were waaayyy worse for us all even just a few decades ago.
kimberley j-i think black tea brings down your cortisol, there's a wikipedia page on cortisol, click around, mine goes up and down like everything else

For those thinking of coconut oil, you need to understand its not all created equally. there are 2 processes for getting the oil, one is chemical/heated, and the other cold pressed (best). even among cold pressed oil, you want to stay with the raw. you will know when you have a good raw product when you open the container and the room is filled with the coconut smell and the oil is tasty (top of the line, my wife eats it right off the spoon). even the oil that isnt fragrant (flat taste) will fill the room with the smell of cocount when you cook with it and is still excellent to use.
for those who dont know, Armour changed their formula in 2010. you need to really chew it to make it work. unfortunately for my wife, its been downhill. going to try the thailand version (no rx needed).

I have hashimotos.. but also have an over active adrenal.. meaning mine is high in moring but keep climbing throughout the day.. so it is very over active and my Cortisol load is 60. Terrible anxiety for 3 years... caused a weakening of my heart... Has anyone ever heard of high cortisol and hashimotos? I read about adrenal fatigue but my is over active. Any ideas?

FERRITIN AND T3: Thanks for reminding us all about RT3 I finally have "rock solid" adrenals, thanks to 25mg HC a day. However, I'm still tired as a slug taking 6 grains of ERFA a day. My T3/RT3 ratio is just 8.5.So, I'm thinking of going on T3 only (time release is what my doc and Holtorf suggest, but others say no, so I'm still confused on that one).

THE PROBLEM IS Ferritin, till down at 26, just one notch past the bottom rung after two years of iron supplements.

Scouring the internet to find ways to get my ferritin up, I found Yellow Dock Root. This, taken with Burdock root is supposed to pump up iron stores like there's no tomorrow!

Anyone had good luck with it? I've seen lots of good reports on Anemia websites. I'm eager to get my Ferritin past 70 so I can deal with this RT3 issue. Thanks!!

I'm so confused. I was on Armour then when Armour went off the market was put on a compounded thyroid...I spun out of control on the compounded, it DID NOT work for me. I'm now back on Armour and felt better for about 6 weeks and am now feeling myself go downhill again. I can't afford constant blood test etc. and need to regain a normal life. My memory is terrible, I stutter at times, I'm exhausted and I can't lose weight to save my life. My blood sugar is high and I'm so desperate for help right now. I honestly don't know where to turn. I sometimes think my husband thinks I'm making this up but I want more than anything to feel good and have a normal life. HELP

(From Janie: you need to be chewing the Armour up thoroughly before swallowing to release the desiccated thyroid from the excess cellulose since the reformulation---the latter which binds the hormone too much unless you break down the cellulose. See earlier blog post about this. After doing that for about a week, then you can assess if you need to raise. http://www.stopthethyroidmadness.com/things-we-have-learned )

Janie, Can you answer that question that the lady above asked. I have had that same question for a year. I had my thyroid removed by radioactive iodine. I stopped drinking soy milk when your website suggested it. I made so many changes at the time and feel really good now. BUT I have always wondered if I am being stupid, because I don't have any thryoid for the soy to interact with. I wonder though will soy affect the medicine dose of my Armour? Thank you so much for your wonderful website. It has given me my life back!

One question I have is, does the soy only affect you adversely if you have your thyroid? About 3 weeks ago I started taking Reliv products and I felt great for about 2 weeks until the hyperT symptoms kicked in full force!

(From Janie: Here ya go: Soy, which is a goitrogen, has been known to be anti-thyroid for many decades. Why? Because is contains isoflavones, and those have an estrogen-like affect on your body i.e. it can depress thyroid function. And, since desiccated thyroid is giving you "thyroid hormones", it does appear that excess soy can affect the desiccated thyroid function as well. Bummer if you like soy, isn't it. But it's moderation that is the key. I still eat some goitrogens, like a few strawberries in my morning yogurt. Even if my goitrogen consumption was affecting me, raising desiccated thyroid would help. But excess soy appears to have other problems, such as on female hormones and liver. So moderation with soy is important. I try to avoid it, personally. Hope that helps.)

Just stumbled upon this site - wonderful! Thank you so much for all the valuable info. I recently switched from 20+ years of Synthroid to porcine - what a difference. Re finding adrenal support - try Standard Process, they have an excellent supplement called Drenamin. Standard Process is sold by chiropractors and is all natural, high quality stuff! Again, thanks very much for this site.
